Iowa’s open meetings law requires public bodies to post an agenda at least 24 hours before a meeting. Most school boards set aside time for public comment at regular meetings, but each sets its own rules.
Before the meeting
- Find the meeting and read the agenda. Ours link to the posted agenda and packet.
- Check the sign-up rules. Many boards ask you to fill out a card before the meeting starts; some ask you to register the day before.
- Write down what you want to say. Most bodies give each speaker about three minutes.
At the microphone
- Give your name and where you live, or which school your family attends.
- Name the agenda item you’re speaking to.
- Say what you want the board to do, and why. One story from your own family carries more weight than general arguments.
Boards usually don’t respond during public comment. Follow up by email to the members afterward, and come back when the item is up for a vote.
